Hallo iedereen!!

Ik ben Brammetje!

Ik ben een klein baby hangoor dwergkonijntje, en woon sinds een paar dagen bij mijn nieuwe mamma, Leintje!
..
Nou denken jullie, hangoor??

Hi Anya,
thanks for your comment :)
congratulations to your daughter and her new friend. Rabbits make great indoor companions as long as everyone takes care with doors and chairs and noise. I don't know if you know - but female rabbits must be spayed when they mature otherwise they have a 90% chance of contracting uterine cancer.
If you would like any rabbit advice please ask - myself and many of the rabbit people I know have years of experience and knowledge.
Rabbits are also very clean and use a kitty litter (but don't use cat litter in it - a rabbit can choke on the clay base). I use paper on the bottom then I shred some old letters and ontop of that I put fresh hay.
best wishes, Annette

Hi Marjolein and Brammetje,

I would just feed a mixed diet - that is - give a dish of very good quality rabbit pellets (I use Burns Natural rabbit pellets which I have found are the very best!
http://www.burnspet.co.uk/rabbit/index.asp - don't buy the 'mixed' packs from supermarkets they are full of sugar and are not suitable for rabbits).
I would also give fresh, washed and dried vegetables every day, such as carrots, carrot leaves, kale, 'greens', parsnips, broccoli and broccoli leaves, brussel sprouts and leaves, turnips.

There are many plants that are poisonous/toxic to rabbits - please be careful if you pick them from a garden (never gather plants near cars or roads)
http://www.double-d-ranch.org/articles/toxic-plants.php

and please visit this Excellent site for information about how to care for and feed your rabbit properly - it really has everything you need to know! -
http://www.rngp.org/index-rabbit-facts.shtml
(this is the rabbit rescue that I got Wesley from - Arabella came from a different rabbit rescue).

He will use his kitty litter in time, there is no rush and all rabbits leave droppings all over the place - that's normal :)
if he pees on the floor then don't worry - just make sure to pick him up gently next time you see him doing it and place him carefully into his kitty litter and give him lots of praise and love when you do it - so he associates peeing in the kitty liter with love.
For my kitty litters I use a plastic tray lined with 2 newspapers, then I shred old letters, papers and bills on top of that (to soak up most of the pee) and on that I put a thick layer of fresh hay for them to eat whilst they are doing their business - this hay will also encourage them to use their kitty litter. I don't use wood shavings as they may choke on the flakes or dust and I don't buy commercial litter fill as it is not suitable for rabbits.
Rabbits only repsond to love and not to shouting, quick movements or loud noises - so always be gentle and careful around him.
And always watch your feet when he runs around the house - he will soon be follwing you everywhere - rabbits love to do that.

Please email me at dhoy@lumison.co.uk
any time and I will help as much as I can.

When I lived in Australia I got a baby rabbit (now I only take in 'rescued' rabbits) and she grew up healthy and happy in my house.

Make sure he has a good quality hay at all times in his room to eat and nibble on. Rabbits need to eat constantly to keep their intestines moving - this is paramount to their well being.

One last very important point - rabbits love to chew electric cables - make sure you have yours all hidden away and all protected in plastic protector sleeves. Including your phone cords and fridge leads.
He will also chew all your carpets, furniture, skirting and books and probably shoes - so make sure you safely hide anything that is not important or that you don't mind being eaten - that is the nature of rabbits :)
and nearly all house plants are poisonous to rabbits too.

Hope this is useful! - the link I gave you is the most important part - all about looking after your new family member, best wishes, Annette
